Team Nike just returned from Brazil where they raced in the Ecomotion Adventure Racing World Championships. In talking to them, it sounded like the heat was oppressive and the suffering was intense. Our team, made up of Mike Kloser, Monique Merrill, Chris Forne and Gordon Walker led for most of the race but a late navigational error put them second overall behind OrionHealth.com from NZ. The guys were a little disappointed for sure, but already focusing on Abu Dhabi next month. For that race, our team will be Mike Kloser, Michael Tobin, Chris Forne and me.
Nora, Ian, Karen & Paul on their way to 3rd place at the World Championships!
I also want to congratulate my friends on Team SOLE, who placed third at the race. SOLE took a nontraditional approach and raced with two women and two men (instead of the typical 1 woman, 3 men). Paul Romero, Karen Lundgren, and Ian and Nora Edmund (who were married two days before the race) had a very strong and smart race in order to beat most of the best teams in the world. Congrats! Check out more here.
Juniper, Ian, Zulu, Hank and I are all headed to Moab this weekend for more training. Gotta get ready for that Arabian heat!
Juniper's not sure how she feels about the early snow either.
I woke up yesterday to winter. It was raining when I went to bed but in the morning we had at least six inches of snow in the backyard and temperatures were in the teens.
This is a tough transition. On the one hand I need to be paddling, running and riding to train for the Abu Dhabi adventure race in little over a month. But with snow on the ground and everyone buzzing about the ski season, I’m also getting fired up for the rando racing season.
I’ve got some ambitious goals for this winter:
Pretty soon the road to our house will have enough snow on it for a quick tour to the mailbox and back on my SkiTrabs. Juniper and I really enjoyed skiing the 3 miles to the bottom of the hill and then skinning home last winter. It’s great training to pull the Chariot and the kiddo back home and I’m getting psyched to get back on it.
Also, I want to congratulate the rest of Team Nike on their finish at the Adventure Racing World Championships. Mike Kloser, Monique Merrill, Chris Forne & Gordon Walker raced through extreme heat, sand dunes and rivers with no water to finish 2nd at Ecomotion. Great job!
Finally, check out some sweet photos from last years Abu Dhabi race by Dan Campbell here.
