This weekend we took a road trip to the desert. My first trip to Moab! Mom is training for a big adventure race next month in Abu Dhabi, which is in the United Arab Emirates. She’s trying to get in as much paddling, biking and running before then, so Moab is the perfect spot to do it all. Plus, Mom and Dad’s friends, Steve and Kristin have a really nice condo there that we could stay in for free.
We left on Friday afternoon. Dad was complaining about the long drive, but I don’t know what he’s talking about, driving is easy if you ask me.
(Don’t worry grandmas, we were parked!)
On Saturday, Dad went mountain biking on the famous Slick Rock trail while I hung out with Mom in the morning.
When Dad got back, we drove Mom up along the Colorado River about 15 miles. Then she got in her kayak and started paddling all the way back to town.
While she was on the water, Dad and I went for a hike up Negro Bill Canyon with Hank and Zulu. The sign at the trailhead said that Negro Bill was one of the area’s first non-native settlers…pretty cool, although the canyon used to have another not-so-nice-name . It was really pretty but I started to get a little chilly in the shady canyon so we didn’t make it all the way to the natural bridge at the end. Next time.
After our hike, we picked up mom by the river.
Then, we loaded the kayak on the truck and Mom took off for a 2-hour road ride on her bike. I was pretty tired so I hung out with Hank back at the condo.
On Sunday, Mom got up early and went for a run while Dad and I slept in. After she got back we had breakfast and then loaded everybody up in the truck. We drove Dad up to the Sand Flats so he could ride the famous Porcupine Rim trail.
After Dad rode for about 3 hours we picked him up and drove Mom down Potash Road so she could paddle the river some more. This time she started by paddling about 5 miles upstream before turning around and coming back.
While Mom was paddling this time, Dad and I hiked up to Corona Arch with Hank and Zulu.
We make this cool two-headed shadow when we hike.
Here’s our first view of the 140-foot arch.
We got right up underneath it.
Hank and Zulu were pretty tired by the end of the hike!
After that, Mom went for a mountain bike ride on the Amasa Back trail.
After Mom’s ride we all went back to the condo, passed out after an awesome weekend and then got up early to drive home on Monday morning.
I can’t wait to go back!
