Polartec® Creates Athlete Advisory Board

Ten world-class athletes will consult on performance fabric development.

07.30.2009 – Polartec, LLC, the developer, manufacturer and marketer of Polartec® performance fabrics, announces the creation of a new athlete advisory board. The diverse, international group of world-class climbers, skiers, alpinists, cyclists, adventure racers and multi-sport athletes will test product year round and meet regularly with Polartec’s development team to provide feedback and discuss performance fabric technology.

“We’re incredibly excited to have such an amazing group of athletes on our team,” states Nate Simmons, global director of marketing for Polartec®. “Polartec extensively tests new fabrics both in the lab and the field and our advisory board will take real-world testing to a new level. We have a long list of new developments that they will be evaluating for consumer launches in 2011 and beyond.”

The new Polartec® Athlete Advisory Board consists of:
• Sari Anderson (30, Glenwood Springs, CO) is a national XC mountain bike champion, a world champion adventure racer and a top randonnée ski racer.
• Antoine Barthelemy (54 of Annecy, France) is an accomplished alpinist and ski mountaineer.
• Bill Belcourt (45, Salt Lake City, UT) is a crusty alpinist and champion paraglider pilot.
• Janet Bergman (29, Madison, NH) is an accomplished all-around climber and consultant to outdoor nonprofit organizations.
• Gord Betenia (47, Vancouver, BC) is a talented ice climber, mountaineer and gear flogger.
• Kelly Cordes (40, Estes Park, CO) is a renowned alpinist, climber, writer and self-proclaimed dirtbag.
• Nick Devore (24, Aspen, CO) is a telemark freeskiing world champion and ski mountaineer.
• Doug Heinrich (47, Salt Lake City, UT, is a world-class all-around climber and multi-sport athlete.
• Mike Kloser (49, Vail, CO) is a world champion mountain biker, adventure racer and legendary multi-sport athlete.
• Laurent Valette (39, Rotherens, France) is an accomplished ultra runner and adventure racer.

A Nice Mother’s Day Surprise!

After lots of trying and some frustration, I still have not figured out how to get this article into the body of this post. I don’t speak French but this video of Pierra Menta is awesome

Sari and I have struggled to describe the sheer beauty, competition, excitement and celebration at the Pierra Menta race ever since we got back from France over a month ago. I just found this video, which is in French, but is a great recap nonetheless. Team America makes some cameos as well. Pete (sounding like a local) and Cary (not so much) at 5:37, Sari (picking her nose?) and Mona at 7:49, Brandon (big smile) at 16:47, Mona’s backside at 19:30 and Jason at 19:36.

We don’t know yet if Sari and Mona will go back to race PM next year, but for anyone who wants to experience the zenith of rando ski racing, this is the place and the race. We highly recommend it!

5 Point Film Festival

I have been invited to speak on A Women’s Wilderness panel of amazing women at the 5 Point Film Festival on Mother’s Day. Joining women of this caliber is a huge honor but I’m also very nervous. This is going to be an awesome way to spend Mother’s Day learning about how these great athletes have managed to balance it all. Please come check it out if you can. You all know my story but it will be a chance to ask the other women direct questions and learn first hand what it’s like to be a World Cup climber, recipient of a heart transplant and to receive stem cell transplants to walk again.

Check out the list of women I’ll be speaking with:

Lynn Hill: World Cup climber, made the first free ascent of the Nose of El Capitan and mother.

Irene Beardsley: Started Stanford Alpine Club, first ascent of Irene’s Arete in 1957, mother and grandmother.

Amanda Boxtel: Founder of Challenge Aspen and learning to walk again through stem cell transplants.

Kelly Perkins: Heart transplant recipient and mountain climber including Kilimanjaro.

Tara Sheahan: Former US Cross Country Ski Team member, Oneness Blessing giver and mother.

My Addiction – Exposed!

For the most part, I try to eat pretty healthy and I don’t really drink alcohol except on special occasions. I like ice cream and dark chocolate, but I can certainly survive without them.

One weakness, ok addiction, that I DO have is Chai Tea. Specifically, Oregon Chai Tea packets in hot water with a splash of steamed milk. Since we don’t have a steamer at home, I’ve discovered the battery-powered Aerolatte frother. It creates a perfect hot, sweet, frothy beverage to start my day. I really can’t seem to get going in the morning without one.

I’ve admitted my addiction, for the world to see, in the January issue of Mountain Gazzette. It’s a little embarrassing, but hey, admitting your problem is the first step to recovery, right? Profile in Mountain Flyer Magazine

My absolute favorite biking magazine, Mountain Flyer, has a really nice story about me in the new issue. Brian Riepe, out of Gunnison, CO, launched the magazine a couple of years ago, to “showcase the riders, racers, events, and culture of rocky mountain cycling.” The magazine has spectacular photos, interesting stories and plenty of gear to drool over. It captures the essence of why I love to ride better than anybody else. I’m honored to be included in its pages.

My friend Heather Sappenfield of Team High Maintenance in Vail wrote the story.
